Description

The best way for a beginner to start learning is a half-day guided outing. Our half-day is a low-impact adventure with no special gear or prior experience necessary. Come as you are, we provide all the necessary equipment, as well as a professional guide and an easy curriculum that will touch on all the basics. It’s an exciting way to spend time on a beautiful mountain stream, and you’ll be hooking fish in no time!

On the day of your the trip you meet your guide at our shop, pick up your fishing license and get fitted for special waterproof wading pants and slip-resistant wading boots. The scenic drive to the river lasts between 5-15 minutes, and your guide may use your time on the road to tell you a bit about local history, or may introduce several basic fly fishing concepts.

The magic starts when you step into the river. The water is cool, the air is warm, and the light is golden. Your guide will demonstrate basic wading and casting skills, and it won’t take long for you to get over your first-time jitters. Depending on the time of year, you may begin your day with ‘nymphing’ – one of the simplest fly fishing techniques – where you drift a sinking fly under the surface of the water. As your learning progresses and the aquatic insect activity increases, your guide may switch over to ‘dry fly’ fishing, where a buoyant fly is used to intercept feeding trout at the river surface.

It won’t be long before you succumb to the soothing tempo of casting your fly above the moving water. Beginners find it to be a very relaxing experience, punctuated by jolts of excitement when you connect with the electric shake of a trout taking your fly.

Back at the shop, when you return from your first outing, you will realize that you are a beginner no longer. You will leave with a basic understanding of the fundamentals, and more importantly you will take the memories of an adventure and of a beautiful day on the water.
